Gastric Banding Surgery

Safe, Effective Lap Band Surgery in Miami for Your Health

Patients with severe obesity who have been unable to achieve a healthy weight through diet and exercise alone can look to gastric banding surgery as another option to improve their overall health. At MiVIP, we offer the best in minimally invasive lap band Miami surgery that allows people to lose needed weight in a safe and effective manner.

Gastric banding surgery is also sometimes referred to as lap band surgery and is able to be done on an outpatient basis. It works by limiting the amount of food that the stomach can hold at one time, helping patients to eat less as well as to feel full before the need to eat more arises.

Advantages of Gastric Banding Surgery

There are many benefits of gastric banding surgery in addition to the weight loss that make it a viable option for a great many people over other types of bariatric surgeries. These include:

  • No cutting of the intestine or stomach
  • Fully reversible
  • Adjustable as needed based upon patient’s progress
  • Very low rate of complications
Patients that choose MiVIP lap band in Miami enjoy the ability to receive minimally invasive outpatient care with highly effective results.

The Surgical Process

In lap band surgery at MiVIP Miami, the surgeon makes a series of small incisions in the abdomen, through which he or she inserts the lap band, an inflatable and adjustable band. This band is then put around the top portion of the stomach in a ring-like fashion. The band is deflated when first inserted and remains as such until several weeks after the surgery.

The band is connected to a small tube with a port that also remains underneath the skin. Via this port, the doctor is able to insert or remove saline into the band. After recovery from the surgery, which typically takes between 4 and 6 weeks, the doctor will add the first amount of saline to the band.

As the saline solution is added, the band tightens around the stomach. The level of saline is adjustable so that the doctor can create the appropriate size of opening that is desired to deliver the needed results.

What to Expect After Surgery

Your MiVIP Miami surgeon will provide you with clear instructions on how to reintroduce food into your diet. You will be able to accept only small portions of liquid food at first with a slow addition of food.

There can be some minor discomfort which is typically easily managed. It is important to chew food well once it is allowed to avoid discomfort in the stomach. Proper nutritional supplements will be required in addition to a carefully followed meal plan. Your doctor and dietician will work with you to develop these guidelines.

Gastric Banding Surgery Prognosis and Results

After a lap band Miami surgery, patients can expect to see a steady but not rapid weight loss. The goal of this surgery is not to transform overnight but to facilitate an ongoing process that obtains and maintains a healthy weight.

If weight loss is occurring too quickly or too slowly, the band can be adjusted to slow down or speed up the process in a safe manner.
