Bariatric Procedures Offered

Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery in Miami Delivers Improved Health

As a medical specialty, bariatrics focuses on understanding obesity. This includes learning about the various causes of and risk factors for this disease as well as identifying options and bariatric procedures to prevent and successfully treat obesity. A person is considered to be obese if his or her body fat percentage is more than 20 percent of what is considered to be normal.

Many advances in the treatment of obesity have been made and continue to be made. Offering effective and minimally invasive bariatric surgery options for patients is important to us here at MiVIP Miami. All of our surgeons are board certified and committed to performing the most appropriate and most minimally invasive procedures for you possible.

Common procedures

Proper diet and exercise can be important components of a person’s ability to maintain a healthy weight. However, there are situations in which these are not sufficient and further options must be considered. The three most common bariatric procedures for treating obesity include:

  • Sleeve gastrectomy
This procedure is sometimes also referred to as simply “the sleeve” and involves the removal of up to 80 percent of the stomach, leaving a small portion that is similar in shape to a banana. The resulting smaller stomach cannot accept as much food which is makes this option an effective bariatric procedure.
  • Gastric banding
Following the same principle as the sleeve gastrectomy, gastric banding reduces the size of the stomach pouch that is able to receive food. Instead of removing part of the stomach, however, this is achieved by placing an adjustable band around a portion of the stomach, slowing down the passing of food into the main stomach area. Gradually the band can be tightened as needed.
  • Gastric bypass
In this procedure, both the stomach and the small intestine are reduced in size. This not only limits the amount of food that a person can consume at one time but also reduces the amount of calories that can effectively be absorbed and processed through the digestive process, creating the desired weight loss.
When you are considering bariatric surgery in Miami, you can count on the surgeons and team at MiVIP Miami to provide the best in sleeve gastrecomy, gastric banding and gastric bypass surgeries.
