About Obesity

Understanding the Disease and Your Treatment Options

miVIP Miami offers patients who have been unsuccessful with traditional weight loss methods the option of surgical procedures to help combat obesity conditions. Obesity is a condition where a person carries approximately 20 percent more body fat than is considered normal. This is typically measured by calculating the body mass index (BMI).

A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29 and obese if it is over 30. Some people are classified as morbidly obese when at least one factor is noted—a BMI over 40, body weight 50 percent or greater above average, 100 pounds overweight and/or heavy weight interferes with daily living.

Obesity Statistics

It is estimated that nearly 35 percent of adults in the U.S. are obese. That calculates to 78 million people. Young adults have an average of 30.3 percent obesity rate and elder adults a 35.4 percent rate while 39.5 percent of middle aged Americans are obese.

Causes and Risk Factors of Obesity

Ultimately, the primary cause of obesity conditions is the intake of more calories than are burned. However, there are other factors that can contribute to obesity, including:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Genetics
  • Personal and family lifestyles
  • Pregnancy
  • Insufficient sleep
  • Psychological issues
  • Medications
Some other medical conditions can also affect a person’s ability to control his or her weight but the above factors are more common.

Common Symptoms

People who are obese can experience many different symptoms that indicate obesity is a problem for them. These include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Low or decreased energy level
  • Muscular or joint aches
  • Varicose veins
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Skin irritations
In addition, many obese people face emotional challenges that can affect their self-esteem.

Surgical Options for Obesity

When traditional diet and exercise regimes alone have been unsuccessful in providing necessary weight loss, surgery can be considered. At miVIP Miami, we offer three primary types of bariatric surgery:

  • Gastric bypass—a combination of creating a smaller stomach pouch and shortening the intestines to both reduce the amount of food that can be consumed and reduce the amount of calories absorbed by the body
  • Gastric banding—a method of making the available stomach receptacle smaller to reduce possible food intake
  • Sleeve gastrectomy—a removal of a large portion of the stomach to permanently reduce the amount of food allowed
A sleeve gastrecomy is sometimes performed before a gastric bypass for some patients. miVIP Miami offers minimally invasive options for bariatric surgeries.

Bariatric Surgery Prognosis

When combined with ongoing lifestyle changes and medical follow-ups, bariatric surgery can have a high success rate with many patients maintaining weight loss and increasing their health.
